Book of the Month (October 2021): “Writing Vertically Creates the Scenery of Words – Why Do We Need Two Japanese Writings in Vertical and Horizontal?”

Today, I would like to introduce “Writing Vertically Creates the Scenery of Words – Why Do We Need Two Japanese Writings in Vertical and Horizontal?” written by Takayuki Kumagai.

Grasping the present state of having a tendency of decrease in vertical writing and increase in horizontal writing, Japanese is analyzed from the results of various experiments and studies to rediscover the attraction of Japanese in which vertical writing and horizontal writing co-exist.

Specificities of Japanese, including the coexistence of vertical writing and horizontal writing, is indicated at important points in the book. It may be an extremely valuable experience to read this book while using such language everyday and comparing it with our own feelings.

I’m usually unaware of it, but when I read this book, I became unexpectedly aware that I have feelings of my own for vertical writing and horizontal writing. Among the studies the author conducted, there are some that I can try on my own right away. I read this book while checking my position and sensation through experience.
