The question “What is your favorite Latin alphabet glyph?” was asked to staff at the Type Project.
Through the last article, favorite Japanese glyphs, such as kanji and kana, were asked about. In this article, the favorite glyph for the Latin alphabet is asked.
Many of them choose “a” and “g” as answers.

・
“g”:
I enjoy both looking and creating this glyph, as there are many features with variations, so I can add or subtract many things.
・
“G,” “S,” “a,” “g,” and “j”:
It is obvious to say how it looks during typesetting is important. As these characters have many highlights in one form, they tend to show the typeface features and the capacity of creators.
・
“R,” “Q,” and “g”:
I like their forms, and I think that the design features appear or apply well in these alphabets.
・
“R,” and “a”:
The are many elements that can be arranged, such as the counter size, length of brushstroke, etc. As “a” in particular is frequently used as a vowel, it is a glyph that can show typeface individuality easily.
・
“g”:
It is not related to the shape, but I liked when I learned about the way of calling it “two-story” and “spectacles.”
・
a:
It appears in the beginning at the time of creation.
Many answer reasons included: there are many design elements, so it is easy to show individuality and make it a feature of the typeface. In fact, “a” and “g” have variations in the structure itself, such as one-story, two-story, etc., and they are distinctive glyphs with multiple, easy-to-arrange elements.

In the Latin alphabet, there are many glyphs with shapes in which the part of the same shape is repeated in the pattern. Among them, glyphs with peculiar elements are eye catching, which can be understood from the other mentioned glyphs.
・
“Q,” and “G”:
They look like decorated “O” and “C,” so they are fashionable.
・
“k”:
I often see it in the initials of names.
・
“i”:
I like the “i” in Garamond Italic.
