Questions for Font Creators Part 3: Favorite Hiragana Glyph 2

The question “What is your favorite hiragana glyph?” was asked to staff at the Type Project.

In the previous article, we presented answers that mentioned hiragana design. In this article, the answers in which “characters used in names” (second highest answers following hiragana design) were introduced.

”も”:
It is in my name, so I think this is a character that I have always been confronted with. I like to write this character by connecting the horizontal stroke with a smart silhouette.

“ひ”:
“ひ” is the most frequently written hiragana as a part of my name. However, I never felt I have written it well, so it is more like a character I care for when I look at it, rather than like.

“ゆ”:
In addition to the fact that I like its round shape, it is used in my name, so I always want to know whether or not the shape of “ゆ” is to my liking when I look at the typeface. When I write by myself, I like to write it unicursally.

“の” and “た”:
These hiragana characters are in my name, so I like them.

Because they have many opportunities to look at and write hiragana characters used in their names, many of the designers come to care about them. It is an interesting point that they have their preferences when writing by themselves.

In the next article, the answers for favorite katakana will be introduced.
