Japanese Yakumono (Punctuation Marks and Symbols) 05: “Symbols”

Collected symbols, such as circles, triangles, square figures, weather marks, etc., vary depending on the font set.

It is a point to show the figures in visually the same size, not to arrange them in size numerically. Showing in the same size can be said to not only of the figures, but the other glyphs too. At the time of learning the basics of typography, I clearly remember practicing visual adjustment with these figures (introduced in this article).

The weather mark can be an interesting glyph in terms of difference by font. Depending on the font, the weather mark may have a cute face in the sun and cloud. However, the weather marks used in Type Project are relatively simple. For now, only the snow mark has a face. In the AXIS Font, the snow mark has a snowman with snowfall. In Hama Mincho, it has a snowman with a hat. In TP Sky, it only has a snowman without snowfall or hat – this is the simplest.
