Vertical typesetting and horizontal typesetting are used for different purposes in Japanese. Most kanji and kana characters can be commonly used for both typesetting directions. There are also characters that are exclusive to either vertical typesetting or horizontal typesetting and different, including parentheses that rotate 90 degrees, kana in small script in which the position changes, punctuation marks, etc. As they serve functions in both font data and typesetting application, these characters are correctly displayed in different ways.
